ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This piece is a collaboration of styles and artistic techniques, drawing in influences from traditional practices, expressionist ingredients, and elements of street art.
I wanted to use florals and botanic as my subject matter to unify these influences because they are universal. Florals are not only iconic and significant in every culture, they have also been a focal point in art throughout history and across cultures and styles – from Japanese watercolour to technical illustrations of botanical anatomy and through to tattoos. They can speak to all five senses and connect us with incredibly personal memories and touchpoints in life. They can represent our heritage, individuality or personal aesthetic.
On my mother’s side, I am coconut trees and hibiscus flowers. On my father’s side, I am clover and a Tudor rose. I am a cocktail of traditional practices and colourful expressionism with a mix of street culture.
